TU Darmstadt Graduates a Favourite among Personnel Managers

It is good for a university to be able to exhibit modern laboratories and as many publications from professors as possible, but what really counts for the university's students is landing a job after graduation! There is no avoiding the assessment of personnel managers. At 87%, personality is the most important criterion for personnel managers, far ahead of professional experience and English skills. The university ranking carried out by the magazine WirtschaftsWoche, in which 534 personnel managers from leading German companies participated, addressed key questions such as “Which universities do the best graduates come from?” and “Are students from public or private universities better?” The business sector has placed the TU Darmstadt high on the list again this year! The TU Darmstadt remains the number one in Business Informatics and ranked third for Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management. The personnel experts voted Electrical Engineering in second place.

On 4th May, 2010, Zeit published the new CHE University Ranking in the 2010/11 university guide, in which some 300 universities and universities of applied science in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands were assessed.

According to surveys, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the TU Darmstadt has a positive reputation thanks to excellent study conditions, student counselling and its top research reputation, making it really stand out among the competition.

The ranking is based mainly on a survey of students and professors who assessed their university in a survey organised by CHE. In addition to the indicators mentioned above, other criteria were assessed, such as professional skills taught, an international focus, IT infrastructure, laboratory equipment, practical relevance and academic publications.

They are looking for a German university which offers top foreign scientists the best opportunities and potential for development. To do this, the Alexander Humboldt Foundation counts the periods of research undertaken at German universities by scholars and prize winners supported though the Foundation. The ranking created refers to the years between 2004 and 2008.

In engineering, the TU Darmstadt takes first place, ahead of even the RWTH Aachen and the University of Stuttgart, who came in second place in the rankings.

Above all, the ranking attests to the attractiveness of German universities to top foreign scientists and thus demonstrates the TU Darmstadt's position among international competition. A top position in the Humboldt ranking is therefore an important indicator for international contacts and the university's reputation.

TU Darmstadt Takes First Place in the 2009 University Rankings of WirtschaftsWoche Magazine

This year, WirtschaftsWoche magazine awarded two universities the top position in the German university rankings. Sharing the same number of points as RWTH Aachen, TU Darmstadt also made it onto the podium.

Nine categories were taken into consideration. On the question of which universities have the best reputation among personnel managers in the Mechanical Engineering sector, the TU Darmstadt gained the second highest number of points.

However, the ranking not only shows personnel departments where the best graduates come from, it also reveals to prospective students which universities are the most lucrative. Criteria such as the recency and relevance to practical application of the knowledge taught, cooperation with the business world, and the maturity and experience of the graduates are the most significant for the decision. The goal of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is for students to establish contact with industry early on in order to practically apply the knowledge they have gained. At the same time, this increases the chances of a job in the future. In addition, the limitation on the number of places available in Mechanical Engineering results in an efficient learning relationship between teachers and students. This means that the students enjoy a highly-qualified education during their studies, which is not only worthwhile for the graduates, but also pays off for Mechanical Engineering at the TU Darmstadt.

Top Positions in the CHE University Ranking

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the TU Darmstadt takes a top position nationally among the universities in the CHE University Ranking 2008/09 in both research and teaching. Mechanical Engineering in Darmstadt is in the top group in four of the five categories – an unparalleled result among German universities!

The CHE University Ranking is carried out for and in cooperation with the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” by the Centre for Higher Education Development in Gütersloh.

It is targeted at

  • anyone who wants to study but isn't sure where,
  • students who want to transfer to a different university,
  • academics and university staff who want to know where their university stands in comparison to others in Germany.

Since 1998, over 130 universities and more than 150 universities of applied science have been included in the ranking. It currently includes the opinions of around 200,000 students and 15,000 professors.

The detailed evaluation can be found on the CHE Ranking pages of Zeit Online.
