Double Degree
École Centrale de Lyon

General Information

The TU Darmstadt and the École Centrale de Lyon (EC Lyon) have been partners for many years. The partnership with the EC Lyon is the first double degree programme that the TU Darmstadt was set up.

Immo Schmidt,
Mechnical Engineering

I opted for the double degree programme with the École Centrale de Lyon to get to know the French culture and language. At first, I was a little worried about the language barrier, as all the courses were in French. Thanks to the excellent support at the EC Lyon and the many contacts with fellow students, these concerns quickly disappeared since my language skills improved very fast in this environment. The special thing about the double degree programme is that the long stay in France gives you a lot of insight into the French culture, lifestyle, and education system.

Course of Studies

The French and German students each spend a total of two years at the respective partner university.

The German students transfer to the EC Lyon after the fourth semester and attend the courses from the fifth to the eighth semester in France.

Before their transfer, the double degree students at the TU Darmstadt are offered a maths support course in French to make it easier for them to start studying at a Grande École.

After their return, the TU Darmstadt students receive their Bachelor's degree and continue their studies with the Master's programme “Mechanical and Process Engineering” at the TU Darmstadt. As soon as they have successfully completed the Master's programme, they will also receive the diploma from the partner university after their courses have been recognised by the EC Lyon.

Application Requirements

The application for the programme is made one year before the start of studies at the EC Lyon, i.e., in the third semester of the Bachelor's degree course at the TU Darmstadt.

Applicants should fulfil the following requirements:

  • very good academic performance
  • Extracurricular commitment and social competence
  • Knowledge of the French language, B1 level
  • Interest in French culture and language
  • Willingness to prepare a final report on the experience gained at the end of the programme

Funding Opportunities & Finances

The double degree programme is funded by the Franco-German University with a grant, currently amounting to approx. 250 € per month.

Hendrik Schmidt,
Mechanical Engineering

I chose the double degree programme with the École Centrale de Lyon because I wanted to go abroad for a longer period of time. The special thing about the exchange programme with Lyon is certainly that you spend two years abroad and therefore have a very intensive experience abroad. The double degree programme in Lyon is a great opportunity to get to know the French culture, learn the language, and also experience a completely different study system.
