40th International Symposium on Combustion in Milan
2024/08/01 by STFS, RSM
The Combustion Institute’s 40th International Symposium – Emphasizing Energy Transition was held in Milan, Italy, from July 21 to July 26. Throughout the week, researchers from around the world presented their work and provided insights into the future of combustion technologies.
This biannual International Symposium on Combustion is the premier event for combustion researchers, offering a scientific platform to share experiences and ideas related to flame. The Technical University of Darmstadt made significant contributions, with several presentations from RSM and STFS. Notably, the poster presentation titled “Analysis of Potential Soot Breakthrough During Oxidation at Aero-Engine Relevant Conditions” by Philipp Koob et al. highlighted the latest developments in soot oxidation as part of the PERseuS Project at the UTC.
In this study, a simplified configuration was derived from real-engine simulations to quantify soot breakthrough to the lean side, depending on oxidation time and soot particle size. The study emphasizes the importance of accurately describing gas-phase mixing and the soot phase to effectively predict soot oxidation in aero-engine combustors.
The paper was recently published in the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute and can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.proci.2024.105672. It is available as open access.
