In this lecture, we focus on the development and design of biomedical products, taking into account regulatory requirements such as the EU legal framework and the German Medical Devices Law. Topics like biocompatibility, material selection, tissue reactions, and the stage-gate process provide a practical overview of current challenges in research and application.
Building on this, we delve into flow and mass transport behavior in biological systems, blood rheology, and membrane processes. Examples such as blood purification, dialysis, drug transport, and tissue engineering highlight the relevance for modern medical devices. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of new technologies, such as 3D printing or controlled drug release.
