Forschergruppe “LES of Complex Flows”
The common topic of this research group is the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of complex turbulent flows. LES has the potential of becoming a widely used simulation tool for flows of practical relevance, not only because of its capabilities of predicting fluctuating quantities like the source term for aero-acoustic simulations, but also because of its improved accuracy compared to the numerically less expensive Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulations (RANS). In this sense, LES can be regarded as key-technology for new developments in computational aero-acoustics (CAA), in fluid-structure interactions, fatigue analysis, aerodynamics, process technology etc. The aim of this research is the improvement of existing and the development of novel approaches to LES which are capable of dealing with high Reynolds number flows in complex geometries in an efficient and reliable way. Some fundamental issues have to be treated in order to improve the applicability of the method for high Reynolds number flows and for flows in or around complex geometries.
