This interdisciplinary project, conducted in cooperation with an international partner from the field of neurobiology, aims to acoustically simulate the sound production of mole crickets . Crickets produce relatively loud sounds by stridulating ( rubbing ) their forewings together , relative to their body size and presumed energy expenditure , suggesting high acoustic efficiency. Furthermore, even small changes in the morphology of the wings ( e.g. , due to sexual dimorphism ) lead to a characteristic change in the emitted sound.

The goal of this thesis is to create an acoustic simulation of the sound generation of crickets' chirping . The simulation is intended to reproduce the phenomena described above in order to better understand them and, for example, to develop new bio-inspired design methods and actuator principles .

Your tasks:

  • If necessary, guided training / refresher of the basics of structural dynamics , finite elements, if necessary acoustics
  • Development of an acoustic (FE) simulation of the sound production of mole crickets : The basis for this is a CT scan of the forewings , which is segmented and discretized with finite elements .
  • Comparison of simulation results with recordings of mole cricket sounds
