Sensor Network Design for Cislunar SSA

External Master Thesis at GMV

Masterthesis

Background:

At GMV, you will join a unique, team-oriented environment where talent, creativity, and commitment are continuously encouraged and challenged. You will become part of an international, multidisciplinary team of more than 100 engineers working on Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) and Space Traffic Management (STM), contributing directly to space sustainability while boosting your career.

Over the next decade, more than 100 missions are planned in cislunar space, spanning both institutional and commercial initiatives. Ambitious plans such as a permanent lunar base and the development of communication and navigation constellations will drive a dramatic increase in traffic within the Earth–Moon system. This surge highlights the need to monitor, coordinate, and secure cislunar traffic, ensuring a sustainable use of space.

Tasks:

This thesis will focus on the tracking of objects in the cislunar environment, exploring how to enable effective monitoring of this emerging space domain. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of existing tools, methods, and studies.
  • Perform an in-depth analysis of the requirements and challenges specific to cislunar operations.
  • Design an optimal sensor network architecture for reliable coverage.
  • Develop and validate numerical analysis tools leveraging the GODOT astrodynamics library.

Requirements / Skills:

  • Enrollment in a Master’s program in Computer Science, Computational Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python (required); proficiency in C++ is a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of astrodynamics (required).
  • Background in statistical inference and dynamical systems (beneficial).
  • Previous exposure to the lectures “Space Flight Mechanics” and “Space Debris – Risks, Surveillance and Mitigation” is an advantage.

Organisational:

  • Start November
  • Working student salary
