Video: Artificial intelligence in additive manufacturing

Within the Mittelstand 4.0 – Kompetenzzentrum Darmstadt, a new AI demonstrator for additive manufacturing was developed at the DiK department. The demonstrator combines the FDM manufacturing process from additive manufacturing with AI applications to determine the print quality. The demonstrator will be used to give small and medium-sized enterprise examples of the use of AI applications in the technical environment.

With each new printing process, the “KI-3D Drucker” photographs the first print layer of an object and evaluates its quality. For this purpose, the captured images are evaluated by a trained neural network and the result is displayed via the graphical user interface. In this way, also inexperienced employees can evaluate the process at an early stage and resource-saving production is ensured.
