Advanced Research / Design Projects at the PLCM

In the project work Advanced Research / Design Project changing problems from the field "Virtual Product Development" are dealt with by an interdisciplinary team.

Semester: winter/summer semester
Start: upon agreement
Credit Points: 6 CP
Length of assignment: The total duration between the start of the assignment and the final presentation should not be less than 2 months and should not exceed 6 months.

An Advanced Research or Design Project is designed for students of mechanical engineering as interdisciplinary teamwork. An extensive task of a scientific, constructive or system-technical nature from mechanical engineering is to be solved independently in an interdisciplinary team, i.e. by students from different disciplines. While an ARP focuses more on the theoretical elaboration of scientific topics, the focus of an ADP is the application of the methods of CAD modeling, FEM calculation and MBS simulation.

The main focus of the advanced research /design project is the independent work of an engineering problem by a student. The student is coached by a research assistant of the PLCM.

The content worked out by the student have to be demonstrated in an interim and final presentation. In addition the student has to do a written report on his acitivities.

ARPs / ADPs

  • Masterthesis, Advanced Design Project (ADP)

  • Baugruppenunabhängige automatisierte Montagepfadplanung für Robotik

Assembly group-independent automated assembly path planning for robotics

    2025/01/30

Masterthesis, Bachelorthesis, Advanced Design Project (ADP)

A method for the automated creation of assembly instructions is intended to increase efficiency in small series assembly. By utilising synergies between different products and identifying connecting elements using CAD models, reusable programme modules are developed. The method will be implemented and tested on a real robot arm.

  • Bauteilunabhängiges 3D bin picking

    Component independent 3D bin picking

    2025/01/30

Masterthesis, Bachelorthesis, Advanced Design Project (ADP)

A universal model for gripping and orientating components using 3D point clouds is intended to drive innovation in robotics. As part of the thesis, the current state of the art for component-independent object recognition is analysed and various solution concepts for component-independent bin picking are developed. One of the concepts will be validated on a real demonstrator.

  • Bachelorthesis, Advanced Design Project (ADP)

In order to develop more sustainable products, new strategies must be developed to anchor sustainability requirements in product development. The aim of this project is to further develop a product while taking new sustainability requirements into account. To do this, a life cycle assessment of the predecessor product must be carried out. Ultimately, a more sustainable product iteration is to be developed.
