Decarbonization of Industrial Processes

Information

The lecture Decarbonization of Industrial Processes: Fundamentals, Process Heat, and Sector-Specific Strategies is given by Prof. Dr. Uwe Riedel in cooperation with the DLR. This lecture takes place at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and is digitally and interactively transmitted for the module at the TU Darmstadt.

The specific topics will be explained in the lecture while in the project part deeper qualitative and quantitative analyses will be performed. The projects will focus on specific industries and their option to reduce their carbon-footprint and achieve climate goals. The focus is on the decarbonization of heat as a crosscutting technology and the steel, chemistry, cement sector – each having specific challenges.

The main contents of the module are:

1. Introduction

2. Techno-Economic Analysis

3. Pinch Analysis

4. Renewable Energy Hub Design

5. Industrial Heat

6. Steel Industry

7. Chemical Industry

8. Cement Industry

These lectures are supported by exercises on techno-economic analysis, Pinch Analysis, energy hub design and Carbon Capture and Use (CCU) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The decarbonization techniques learned will then be applied as part of a study project.
