Michael Wiesheu awarded with ECMI prize

2023/07/10

Our former master student Michael Wiesheu received the Hansjörg Wacker Memorial Prize 2023 of the ECMI for the best mathematical mater thesis on an industrial project – Congratulations Michael!

Michael Wiesheu, who is now a doctoral student with Prof. Dr. Sebastian Schöps within the CRC TRR 361, completed his masters in Computational Engineering at TU Darmstadt in 2022. He wrote his master thesis “Shape optimization of a magnetocaloric cooling system with isogeometric finite elements” with the Darmstadt-based start-up MagnoTherm, which was jointly supervised by Prof. Weeger and Prof. Schöps. For this thesis, he was now awarded the prize for the best mathematical dissertation at the Masters level on an industrial project by the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI).

The Hansjörg Wacker Memorial Prize was established in memory of ECMI founding member Hansjörg Wacker (1939-1991), who was Professor of Numerical Mathematics at the Johannes Kepler University, Linz. The prize is jointly funded by ECMI and by a consortium of institutions from Linz which comprise the Industrial Mathematics Institute and the Institute of Computational Mathematics of Johannes Kepler University, and the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. It consists of a prize of 1000 Euros and the invitation to attend the ECMI 2023 conference presenting his/her project as a contributed talk.
